Newfoundland Moves Forward with Vapes, but Still Restricting Flavours

Residents and visitors to Newfoundland and Labrador have been unable to purchase legal cannabis vapes. It was a decision made for the betterment of the citizens, as research into these products was lacking, and reports of serious medical issues associated with vaping were becoming more prominent in the US.

Recently, the provincial governing body removed much of the ban on cannabis vapes. The ban, which is still partially in effect, was an early attempt at limiting access to products which appeal to youth. Products with added flavours, those not organically found in cannabis, are still restricted, but consumers can now enjoy rapid onset, combustion free cannabis products at their convenience.

The shift in policy will help bolster sales within Newfoundland and Labrador, where regulated sales of recreational cannabis reached $5.7 million dollars in September (roughly 1.5% of total Canadian sales).

Given the growing appetite for cannabis, the move to permit vaping products will further help eliminate the illicit market, as consumers can now purchase legal products from licensed retailers – a move that will directly impact the legacy market, and help attract foreign residents and tourism.

With Quebec implementing similar laws in 2019, we can only hope that the Société québécoise du cannabis (SQDC) will reconsider their position, and expand their available formats, as every Canadian deserves access to cannabis and their preferred means of consumption.
